This midsized mutant vehicle will become a kaleidoscope of fantastic butterflies of various sizes, materials and patterns. The wings will dazzle in the daylight and at night the creatures will be radically lit with colorful LEDs.
Butterflies are a symbol of transformation in cultures worldwide. They represent spirit, soul, beauty, hope and change. This is a fitting symbol for the Burning Man experience as thousands of Burners every year travel near and far to share in a transformative experience that inspires our creativity and communal efforts. This unique environment allows us to unfold our wings and fly our colors.
Butterflies play an important role in our food system. They are powerful pollinators, making them beneficial to farms and gardens. They are able to travel longer distances that bees. Our butterflies will aid in nourishing people on the playa while we flutter about and serve butterfly pasta to hungry revelers.
This gift is the brainchild of Sheri Spellwoman. She has been the lead welder and a primary builder for the Unaverz mutant vehicle. Ulan McKnight is her principal support. The base truck for our mutant vehicle is a 1981 Ford 150. We will completely remove the truck bed and cut away most of the cab. After demolition and the required automotive upgrades, we will build a steel rectangular frame, 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide by 9 feet long. The frame will include a cubby above the cab.
A rabble of butterflies will be attached to the frame. The project is a materials experiment. Some of the wings will articulate while others will provide shade from the sun and shelter from the wind.
Participants will enter the truck from the back. The interior will be appointed with custom-built couches to relax on and meet new Burners. The overall design is airy, welcoming and includes a cozy cuddle nook above the cab. A small viewing area will be accessible on the top floor in order to experience a butterfly’s view of the festival while a modest sound system will play tunes for riders to enjoy.
